From idea to shelf: how we build a brand

Every product on a shelf started as a question. For Ancient Fields, ours was: what do dog owners need when they’re looking for better ingredients, targeted nutrition and more transparency?

Getting from that question to something you can pick up and buy takes four connected stages, which we call Build, Source, Create and Grow. Here’s what happens in each, told through the thinking behind our first brand.

Build: starting with a real need

We start by listening to what matters to the people we’re creating for, what they’re looking for and what gets in their way.

What we heard shaped the range itself. Instead of one product trying to do everything, the range splits the work: a complete wet food for the main meal, toppers and oils for something specific in the bowl, and treats for training and rewards. It also shaped the brand, from the name and the identity to the way the packs explain what’s inside.

Not every idea makes it this far. Before we build a new brand, we look for genuine consumer demand, a clear market opportunity, a strong reason for it to exist and commercial potential for the retailers who’ll sell it. If an idea doesn’t meet those standards, it doesn’t go ahead. We’d rather build fewer brands, properly.

Source: where quality is decided

Next comes what goes into the product, and where it comes from. Before we work with a supplier, we look at product quality, specifications, traceability and relevant compliance documentation, such as certificates of analysis.

We choose suppliers for their expertise, quality standards, reliability and ability to meet our requirements, rather than for where they’re based, and we work with partners in the UK and internationally. The same standards apply to every one of them. This is also where packaging is sourced and checked, long before anything is printed.

Create: asking better questions

Then it’s time to make it. We developed the Ancient Fields formulations alongside specialist canine nutritionists, with one rule running through all of it: a product’s quality and nutritional purpose come before its marketing appeal.

Our targeted toppers show what that looks like in practice. We started from everyday needs, such as joints and mobility, digestive health and dental health, and chose ingredients to meet them. Every one had to answer the same questions:

  • What does it actually do?
  • What evidence supports its use in dogs?
  • At what level does it make a meaningful difference?
  • Does it work well with the other ingredients?
  • Is it safe and appropriate for everyday use?
  • Can we substantiate the claim we’d want to make?

Those questions go further than whether an ingredient has recognised benefits. We also ask whether we’re using a good-quality form the body can make real use of. Evidence matters, but so does understanding how ingredients work together in the finished formulation.

For our toppers, it also shaped what we say: every claim had to be supported by relevant evidence, suit the formulation and comply with the rules. Most of the work is in small, deliberate decisions like these, made again and again through development.

The same thinking carries through to the pack. And once a product is right, production planning and batch management keep it right, because it has to be as good the thousandth time as the first.

Grow: from the first order onwards

Ancient Fields launches in Winter 2026/27, and that’s where the next stage begins. We’ll manage it across online and trade channels, which keeps us close to the people who buy and stock it.

From the first order, we’ll combine performance data with direct feedback from owners and retailers, and use it to keep improving the products and the experience around them. A product that sells well but disappoints a retailer’s customers isn’t a success, so the shops that stock the range will have our support too.

Working with partners

None of this happens alone. We work with formulation, manufacturing, packaging and logistics partners, and try to be the partner we’d want ourselves: direct access to our founders, clear briefs and openness about our plans.

Built for the whole journey

We’ve described the four stages one at a time, but in practice they overlap all the time. A retailer’s feedback can shape the next batch. A new ingredient can open up a new product. And what a pack can say always depends on what’s inside it. That’s why they’re connected from day one.

You can read more about our approach on What We Do. And if you’re a manufacturer, supplier or specialist who’d like to be part of what we build next, we’d love to hear from you.

Questions about how we build brands

How does Mancunian Brands decide which brands to build?

We look for genuine consumer demand, a clear market opportunity, a strong reason for the brand to exist and commercial potential for the retailers who’ll sell it.

Does Mancunian Brands work with UK suppliers?

Yes, and international ones. We choose partners for quality, expertise and suitability rather than location alone, and the same standards apply to all of them.
